When I drive through some of the small, forgotten towns here in Ohio, this story resonates with me. Those of you who have not yet read her novel Butcher (published in 2024) should do so. It is a wonderfully told story.

I am enjoying listening to, rather than reading, the story; while getting meds and breakfast ready. Love Substack voice capability.

Damn I had no idea this was gonna go where it went. Wonderful to read, I love having longer fiction to read on substack too.

I have seen that bridge, or at least one like it, on back roads in west-central Illinois. One sticks out in my memory because the road leading to it was no longer there because the bridge was more than a little shaky.

Thank you, extraordinary! You sure can smell and see it all....in not so often described surroundings....

One of my favorite short stories of all time. I read this when it was originally published and as a poor girl raised in the country on the outskirts of a dilapidated mining town, it really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing this. I truly enjoyed rereading it.

That's a superior book that I've greatly enjoyed. Recommended.

PS: Any chance Ms. Oates may join Bluesky? I used to enjoy her Tweets in the before-times.

Thx!
